Our
American Beauty Solder Pot will reach and maintain the temperatures required to
melt many lead free solders and the crucibles have always been made of grey cast
iron because of the fairly common use of tin in solder alloys and therefore the
higher tin content of lead free solders should not present any problem. Iron as
such does not readily dissolve into tin at temperatures below 800° F. There is
some solubility of iron into tin at elevated temperatures however, two
intermetallic compounds (FeSn and FeSn2) are formed that minimize this activity.
The Tin/Ferrite that forms actually helps prevent any further solution activity
of the tin. An important thing to remember when choosing a lead free solder to
use is that the solder pot should be operated at 100-150°F above the liquid
temperature of the solder alloy being used. Therefore the solder alloy you
choose should have a liquid temperature that does not exceed 650-700°F
